Check the Resolution

The first aspect is resolution. If you are planning to print a lot of illustrations, photos, or other graphics, you will need a higher resolution.

Is the Printer Fast Enough?

The next question to ask is the printer speed. If you're going to print mostly text, you should try to get as fast a printer as you can. If you are planning to print a lot of pages, you also need to find out how many sheets can fit in the input and output trays.

A typical ink jet printer can produce two to four pages per minute of text and one full-page, 8.5-by-11-inch photo or graphic in two to three minutes. Some color ink jet printers are capable of printing photos at a level that is similar to the quality of a professional photofinisher.

Check Your Consumables

Find out the capacities of the ink cartridges for the printer you're considering. And keep in mind that you will probably not run out of black ink and color ink simultaneously, so make sure that you have separate cartridges for each.

Check the prices of the ink cartridges of the printer you are considering and know how many pages each cartridge will print. Once you figure out roughly how many pages you will print each month, you can determine the cost of the printer plus ink for a year. Consider getting individual cartridges if you know you'll need one color more than others - for example, if many of your documents have a logo of a particular color or if you print mostly black and white.

Check Paper Sizes and Weights

Many of the lower-priced printers can only handle 8.5x11-inch paper of medium weights. It’s okay if that is what you are mostly going to print on, but if you may need to print on legal or ledger paper, or will need to print on heavyweight paper, make sure the printer can put up with them.
